The basic rhythm track for When Im Sixty-Four was recorded on December 6, 1966 during an eventing session. Because the group was already so familiar with the song, the rhythm track was laid down within a couple of hours. A couple of days later, McCartney showed at at studio alone for a three hour session to record his lead vocals onto the basic rhythm track. The next recording date for the song was December 20th, and this time all four Beatles were present. Lennon, McCartney and Harrison would all overdub the harmony vocals heard in the bridge and Starr would overdub the orchestral bells in the bridges aswell. This session concluded at 1am the following morning. December 21st was the day the clarinets were brought in and within two hours the session was complete. This completed the song. Sometime after the decision was made by McCartney to raise the key of the song up by nearly one semitone from C major to Db major. This demonstration was performed in the key the song was originally recorded. THE BASS PART: McCartney used his 1964 Rickenbacker 4001s. Theres nothing too crazy going on. The only thing I found to be worth mentioning was at 1:45 where instead of going straight into the note he does a pickup (+ 1) into it and continues the line as normal. This does not occur in the first bridge. THE GUITARS: The volume of both guitars have been brought up for clarity in this demonstration Lennon and Harrison both played (I assume) their 1965 Epiphone Casinos. One guitar essentially mimics the bass. This same guitar does some sporadic fills played in octaves in the bridges. These dont really show up in the final mix but are audible in the master tapes.
